    This textbook serves as both an excellent introduction and as a thorough reference source for more experienced staff. It is attractively structured, with a mix of photographs, charts and bullet points offering a variety of routes to the information... This book does much to demonstrate that the professional practitioner provides holistic care for the perioperative patient... An excellent chapter on leadership discusses bullying and harassment, as well as management strategies to combat them.

    Well-respected text, but strong US orientation may hamper its usefulness in the UK/European markets Meeker: Alexander' s Care of the Patient in Surgery Mosby, 1999. 1248pp, £39.95.
    It looks specifically at patient care in various surgical specialities which Woodhead and Wicker does not.

    Hind/Wicker, Principles of Perioperative Practice, 044306251X, May 2000, Churchill Livingstone, 256pp, £19.95
    This is another compact book which gives a shorter and narrower perspective on some of the same topics. It does not have the depth, range or scope of W&W.

    Hodge, Day Surgery, 044305343X, January 1999, Churchill Livingstone, 260pp, £18.95.
    This book is focused exclusively on day surgery. However, given the depth and scope of the W&W day surgery chapter, it is more valuable to day surgery staff because of its holistic approach to patient care, from a wide perspective, but with specific information on day surgery.
